Ron's Story - page three:
Certainly the 1978 Mr. America and the negative publicity that it inspired totaled to a very sorry day for bodybuilding. And yet Ron Teufel returned along the same route in 1980 to repeat his earlier mistakes. Once again he decided to prepare at Gold’s. Of course, by this time the gym was under different management and ownership and Ron had come to believe his tormentors were no longer in a position to influence his bodybuilding life. He would eventually have cause to change that point of view. One week before the 1980 Mr. America contest, Teufel appeared to rousing applause at the Miss Olympia contest, staged at the Sheraton Hotel in Philadelphia. Also on the bill as guest posers were Mike Mentzer, Boyer Coe, Frank Zane, Robby Robinson and Danny Padilla. Ron's muscularity was sharper than ever before and clearly he had gained more size in most body areas. His abdominals, for which he had long been famous, seemed etched out of stone. When he offered his most muscular pose it seemed the veins would pop out from under his California tan. Clearly Teufel was confident of victory one week before the 1980 Mr. America contest. Following his appearance in 1978, he had worked extremely hard at adding finishing touches to his physique. Where he was once criticized for being too “boxey.” Teufel had set about acquiring a more symmetrical appearance. He had concentrated on gaining a higher chest and succeeded in cutting more striations into his thighs. He said peak contraction work had given his biceps better height and, while allowing that he was still not perfect, Teufel felt his chances in the Mr. America contest had never looked better.
